How to Prepare (Performing): We ask that you prepare 32 bars (about 30 seconds) of music in operatic or musical theatre style. Sheet music clearly labeled “Start” and “Stop” for our accompanist to play as you sing is preferable, but a capella is also acceptable. These are not lead auditions; those admitted into the company are guaranteed at least an ensemble role in every show we do during your time at Penn but lead auditions happen internally later in the semester.
How to Prepare (Tech): Come with an idea of what area of tech you’d like to work with us on, whether it be costumes, lights, stage management, set design, etc. — we’re always accepting new tech members in every department! If you don’t have a ton of relevant experience, think of what you can bring to the table! We are more than willing to train and mentor.
What to Expect (Performing): When you arrive, Singers Board Members will be there to greet you and have you fill out an audition form. You will be given a number of monologues to read through and pick one to perform in the audition. When you are ready, you will be brought back into the audition room where you will sing your song, read the monologue you picked, and most likely will be asked to sing scales with the help of the pianist.
What to Expect (Tech): When you arrive, we will have you fill out an audition/interest form. You will then sit down for an informal interview with our Tech Directors that will last around 4-7 minutes where they will assess where your skills and passions can fit into our company.
And that’s it!
Only performing members in the company are allowed to audition for leads in our productions.
How to Prepare: All Performing Company Members interested in lead roles will sign up online for a 10 minute audition time slot. Please prepare 32 bars of a song in the style of Into the Woods (can be the same as your new member audition song).
What to Expect: In the lead audition itself, you will deliver a cold-reading of a side from the show, and sing your 32 bars in front of the Music Director, Director, and Accompanist. A dance call is possible.
Within 24 hours, callbacks will be announced.
